Anthropic introduced a 30-day data retention requirement with Fable 5 in June, citing the need to detect sophisticated misuse patterns that span multiple sessions and accounts. Enterprise customers with data-sovereignty requirements pushed back. EFS is the fix: interaction data stays in infrastructure you control. Anthropic's pattern-detection runs against your storage and returns only category-level signals — not the underlying prompts.

Three practical facts:

  • Anthropic doesn't charge for EFS; your cloud provider bills storage and data operations at standard rates.
  • Works whether you access Claude directly or through AWS Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry, or GCP Vertex.
  • Phased rollout through fall 2026; eligible customers receive zero retention on Fable 5/5.1 as an interim measure now.

Limit to note: customer-controlled storage is not the same as zero retention — data still exists, in your cloud account. Fully automated review also means Anthropic cannot assist with incident reconstruction that would require content review.

Why it matters: If a data-residency or compliance requirement has been blocking your team from Fable 5 or 5.1, EFS is the unlock — customer-owned storage satisfies most data-sovereignty policies without losing the frontier model tier.
