GitHub's AI Model Roster Reshuffles: Models Playground Gone Today, Gemini Out of Copilot Tomorrow

Two GitHub AI platform changes arrive back-to-back: the free Models inference API goes offline today (July 30), and Gemini 2.5 Pro plus Gemini 3 Flash are removed from all Copilot experiences tomorrow.

GitHub Models fully retired (July 30). The playground, model catalog, and models.inference.ai.azure.com inference API are all offline as of today. This endpoint was commonly used for free access to GPT-4o, Llama, Mistral, and other models without a separate API account. GitHub closed Models to new customers in June; today is the hard shutdown for everyone. See the companion post below for migration options.

Gemini deprecated from all Copilot experiences (effective July 31). Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash are being removed from Copilot chat, inline edits, ask mode, agent mode, and code completions. If your organization's Copilot policy pins either Gemini model, update it before end of day today — they stop working tomorrow. No replacement Gemini model is being offered.

Why it matters: Teams that relied on GitHub Models for free inference in CI or development workflows need to migrate today. And Copilot shops using Gemini need to act by end of day — the deadline is tomorrow, not next week.
