Fable 5 Billing Splits Today: Max Gets Weekly Access, Pro Pays Per Token

TL;DR: Starting today (July 20), Fable 5 permanently splits by tier — Max/Team Premium gets it at 50% weekly limits, Pro/Team Standard gets a $100 one-time credit then API billing at $10/$50 per million tokens.

After weeks of temporary caps and extensions, Anthropic made the Fable 5 tier structure permanent. Effective today:

Max and Team Premium: Fable 5 is bundled at 50% of standard weekly usage limits with no per-token charge. If you were forced to credits during the July 1–19 credit-only period, switch back to the model selector — it's included again.

Pro and Team Standard: Fable 5 is no longer a bundled subscription feature. Anthropic issued a one-time $100 usage credit to soften the transition; once that's exhausted, Fable 5 use is billed at API rates: $10/M input tokens, $50/M output tokens.

Background: Fable 5 was redeployed on July 1 after U.S. export controls were lifted, initially as a temporary 50% cap on all plans through July 7. This update makes the tier split permanent rather than extending the temporary window again.

Why it matters: If you're on Pro and using Fable 5 inside Claude Code agentic workflows, the $100 credit disappears fast — a typical 10-turn coding session can easily consume 200K+ output tokens ($10+). Either upgrade to Max ($100/month includes the 50% weekly cap) or recalibrate workflows to use Sonnet 5 (the current Claude Code default) for most tasks and reserve Fable 5 for hard problems.
