TL;DR: Starting July 8, Anthropic may require Claude Free/Pro/Max subscribers to submit a government ID or biometric facial scan — accounts that refuse risk suspension. API keys and Enterprise contracts are not in scope.

Under updated privacy terms, Anthropic has reserved the right to demand identity verification from consumer subscribers in unspecified circumstances. Two verification tiers:

  • Age-only checks: handled by Yoti — returns a pass/fail result only; no ID image or biometric data is passed to Anthropic.
  • Full identity checks: handled by Persona Identities — government ID scan plus facial geometry capture. That data goes to Persona; Anthropic acknowledges it "may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions." Checks have run in limited form since April 14 for select use cases.

What triggers a check isn't disclosed. There's no opt-out. Refusing may result in account suspension.

Who's affected: Claude Free, Pro, Max personal accounts. Not affected: Claude API keys, Claude for Work/Enterprise contracts.

Why it matters: Most developers using Claude professionally work through the API, which isn't in scope. But if your team relies on Claude Pro or Max accounts for day-to-day coding help, flag the July 8 date — a verification prompt may appear without warning.
